Imagine this from a bird's eye view... we're flying over the battlefield. The USS Spectre... or what's left of the Akira Class Heavy Cruiser is embedded into the terrain, ripping it up for several miles. Civil War. The thumps of plasma and photon mortors rip through the air, arching high up into the sky before falling downward, shimmering before slicing into the ground, exploding with a shockwave that sends the terrain up into the air. The bird caws, moving over the urban area where we sit. Personnel run through the area, the blasts of phaser fire slamming into the buildings, crumbling the already worn and crumbling walls. This is war. We're looking at a few city blocks. Most buildings are crumbling, streets are filled with hover vehicles and shuttles that are on fire. A few buildings remain, but not many.

Before things start up, Stewart looks around at the scenario, getting a feel for the setting. He then turns to his team, "Okay. Tactically, I think we're outmatched. So we're going to have to play this smart. We probably can't get ahold of one of those mortars, and I'll wager the vehicles are all disabled. We won't have time to get one running in time. You, girl I don't know. You're an engineer of some stripe?" He turns to Devereaux, pointing, "We can probably use one of the shuttles for cover. They're not ideal, but they're practically bunkers."

Havaris rather instantly motions everyone over to the corner of a building to buy them some minimal cover as they talk tactics. "If I know Stewart, he's selling his team short. They'll be on the defensive out there. I expect he'll want us to take the fight to him. And I'm perfectly amenable to that. Hardpoints buy time, not victory, and defensive strategies are losing strategies. I want Tricorders out and on sweep. Once we have their location, we move in to flank and catch them in a corssfire. If we can't get that close, we alter the plan as necessary. Tricorders out, let's find their position." And out comes his tricorder.

Turtledove nods even as she pulls her tricorder out. She flicks a look at Meran, giving the officer a slight grin and wink as she begins scanning for Team Foxtrot.

Meran also takes out her tricorder, giving Turtledove a mischevous wink as well. Tricorder open, she scans the area around her, looking for the biosigns of the other team.

Hazel eyes look upwards, the grim realism of the holodeck ever present for Devereaux. Sure, he was all for it, but it brings back a situation he's been through on the front lines. Swallowing, he watches the red star-like projectile that flies over head, knowing that where ever it lands - death will reign. Attention landing upon Stewart, he nods as he listens, and although he's good for following orders, he's also good for offering suggestions. "Understood, but Summer is an Ops Officer, not an Engineering." looking around, making sure they have enough cover, he continues, "I'd suggest we get you on a high point, building top - with such a height advantage, it'll take a bit more work for them to detect you. We use you to cover Summer and I. I'd suggest we use our tricorders for detection, but also as a decoy. Set them to emit our biomass readings to distract them."

Summer whips out her tricorder, frowning. "I'm a commtech, a bridge-bunny..I haven't..aw, what'dyou know." She begins toying with her tricorder, trying to emit her biomass reading as she glances towards Deveraux "So baby, how far are we talkin' spreading out our signal, huh? Guess it's just you. N' me, coverin' his thorny-butt."

"I've got nothing. Turtledove? Meran?" Kusto slings his tricorder and lifts his rifle, peering around the corner and through the sight to take stock of their position.

Stewart points, "There. We head there." Specifically, he points to where there's a building that still stands, with a ruined shuttlecraft in front. The building appears relatively stable, with windows along the top two floors. "I'll take the high point, you two bunker down in the shuttle. Dev, give it a brief look, see if there are any operational systems. I mean any, right down to the seat tilt controls. Keep me informed. Comm, you think you can wash out their links, and keep them from communicating? Preferably leaving ours intact? If so, do it. If you have to abandon the position, do so decisively, and hold fire. Suggest a charge with wide-beam fire to get heads down. But keep in mind that cover is our advantage, at least for now. We clear?"

Stewart waits for the 'clear' response from the team, and then bolts for the building, keeping his head down, but really sacrificing cover for speed in this instance, hoping they're not yet within fire range of the other team.

Turtledove sweeps her tricorder around slowly, regarding the device intently. Her eyebrows twitch as she comes to a gentle stop, her tricorder poised in the general direction of team Foxtrot. Her mouth curves slightly. "I've got their current position, sir." She tilts her head forward. "That way."

Turtledove tilts her tricorder output toward Havaris, giving him a look at the data.

Meran shakes her head and sighs, adjusting her tricorder a bit. She looks up at Turtledove's comment, a twitch of a smile on her face as well, and into the direction she's pointing. "It's just a matter of judging what they find to be the best cover," she says, peering out in that direction.

The total soldier, or, at least an experienced one. A Type-III is slung over his right shoulder, strap tight to keep it in place. In his right hand, a Type-II. Devereaux watches the area, allowing Stewart to either agree with him, or decide on an alternate. Reaching to his right side, his left hand grasps his tricorder and flips it open, thumbing a button to keep the device rather quiet - they're always so damn loud. Hazel orbs sweep the area once more, looking up as he overhears the thrusters of Peregrine fighters, watching as they lash out with phaser fire which drives into the aft section of a Danube Class Runabout. Attention once more on Stewart, he nods in agreement and moves to cover a good portion of his body behind some debris, covering Stewart. Up above, the aft section of the Runabout erupts into flames, the vessel loosing control as fire consumes the inside... leaving no one to pilot it as it slams into the bedrock outside the city. Content once Stewart makes it, he looks over his shoulder to Summer, "Leap Frog. I'll run out half way, you show up, then we move on. Head to the shuttle." and with that said, Ethan makes his way half way to the shuttle, dropping down onto his stomach with his tricorder scanning and his phaser ready.

GAME: Devereaux spends a courage point.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Personal Equipment (Tricorder) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

Summer looks rather lost, looking blankly towards Dev. She blinks once..twice..then shrugs. "I'll uh..do that, and just follow him." She shakes her head as she follows, still toying with the tricorder. "Damn thing..piece of junk." As he flops down, she blinks a bit. What in the? Rushing foreward, she runs towards the shuttle..but doesn't stop, she just keeps going, trying to gain entry into it.

Havaris spends some time analyzing the tricorder readings and taps at it indicatively with a growing grin. "My boy." Chuckling, he motions away from their position. "They're taking up defensive positions. We move fast and hard and take them from the rear. Fast. Fast fast fast. If we take fire from Stewart on the way in -- which seems doubtful -- we take up positions and fire for effect. If we can take him out from distance on the ground, we stand a better chance of flanking his team. And he'll find it hard to keep control of his unit at that distance. Turtledove. You take point. Move fast and hard. I'll take the middle. Meran, you've got the rear. Let's move." That said, Kusto returns the tricorder and takes off at a run after Turtledove.

<CONTEST> Stewart (claiming advantage) contests his Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

Turtledove, the good little ensign, nods to Havaris' order, quietly eager, and immediately sets off at a quick pace, her lithe and nimble form streaking quite naturally through the war-torn area, making for the team's rear. Her tricorder is clipped away en route, and her Type II pulled out. Her Type III swings gently on her shoulder, as if she's somewhat accustomed to running around with it.

Turtledove takes care to dart between the carnage as necessary, affording her and her team-mates some cover.

Shit! Shit Shit! And so Ethan is left out in the middle of no where, but this is okay. He gets up and moves towards the shuttlecraft at a swift pace, landing the _outside_ of his feet before the inside as to avoid making as much noise as one normally does. Quickly and aptly making his new location the shuttlecraft, Devereaux looks about and quickly locates himself some 'excellent' cover, and will attend to it in a moment. He looks to Summer and motions to the shuttlecraft, "Quickly see if any of it is advantages." and then looking to Stewart, then motioning to one of the Type-I's, "If you don't mind sparing one just in case."

GAME: Meran spends a courage point.

<CONTEST> Meran (claiming advantage) contests her Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

Meran stows her tricorder away and pulls out her Type II, her Type II slung over her shoulder in a manner that minimizes it's interferring with her quick run through the desolate landscape. She easily navigates the wreckage between them and the other team, nimbly leaping over some smoldering bits of metal and brick. Her dark eyes glance up to Turtledove and Havaris, keeping pace with them on their approach, and looking to the terrain ahead.

Summer hops into the shuttle, poking around, pushing a few panels over, then peeks out, shaking her head. "Nuh-uh, it's slag'd. Look's like we're on our own!"

<CONTEST> Stewart (claiming advantage) contests his Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

The ground shakes all about, a barraige of photon mortors landing near the city blocks, ripping up the urban setting and sending more debris about. The sound of Federation Heavy Weapons Platform rage outside the city blocks, their heavy phaser cannons lashing outwards, destruction their only goal.

Stewart spends awhile trying to find to find cover, though his success is, well... very much dependant on your point of view. From the front, where there is no one, it's probably a tough shot. From the back, where people are approaching, it's not nearly so tough. Whoops.

Team Alpha makes their way through the streets at a full tilt, dodging exploding debris, leaping over corpses and broken equipment, skidding around burning hulks of assault vehicles and broken buildings, guided only by Turtledove's tricorder and the tactics of their Team Leader. They reach their goal as yet undetected, the rear flank of Team Foxtrot's position, still within range of Stewart's phaser -- but screened from fire by the building where Summer and Devereaux are concerned. Kusto wastes no time once they've reached their position. He motions for his team to find easy cover and searches for some, himself.

<CONTEST> Havaris contests his Command (Combat-leadership) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

Stewart calls out through the window, "Keep an eye out. They may have taken their own cover, or they may not. Unless you know they've seen you, save your first shot till you can make it count."

The ground rumbles beneath Ethan's feat, a nearby photon shell landing deep within the earth. All around their own private war, a much larger one continues to rage one. The sounds of phaser fire continue to reign supreme at varying distances, and overhead the sounds of impulse engines and thrusts rip apart the atmosphere. For Devereaux, cover is all around him. Damn, it's literally a foxhole for team foxtrot, though more of a slit. Content with his cover, and ready to deal with an assault, he pulls out his tricorder, resting it beside him and begins to scan the area for Team Alpha, knowing they're probably close. If he _does_ locate them, he's sure to pass it onto the other members of his team.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Personal Equipment (Tricorder) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

<CONTEST> Summer (claiming advantage) contests her Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Routine and Succeeds!

Turtledove , nods to Havaris, her eyes alight with anticipation, in spite of the ground-shaking and the noises from above. She takes a quick sweep of the area, then darts for what she considers to be decent cover... a pile of rubble to the side. She kneels there, her rifle at the ready. Decent cover from the front perhaps, but zero cover against a shot from the roof.

Meran raises a hand above her head, keeping the smaller bits of debris from slamming into the back of her neck. A thin slice of wall jutts out of the ground before her, and she flattens herself against it, her phaser held ready at her side. With her other hand, she fishes her tricorder out and flips it open, making a quick scan of the area, hoping to find the hidden members of team Foxtrot.

Summer takes cover in the shuttle, getting her rifle to the ready. "Y'know..I really don't think I'm supposed to be shot at..I'm far too pretty to die!"

Stewart keeps his eyes peeled for any sign of the opposition at the moment, not having yet sighted anyone. Upon noticing he's still badly exposed, he drops down into a crouch, trying to find a better position. Preferably one where he's not El Sitting Duck.

<CONTEST> Stewart (claiming advantage) contests his Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Routine and Succeeds!

Havaris takes his cover behind a fallen bit of wall, tucking into a crouch behind it. Decent cover from the front, and a fair height to hide behind in the event of a shot from height. He points two fingers at his eyes, motions to the top of the building, and gestures for the team to engage. The command translates roughly to 'Scan the roof for a target and open fire if you see one.' He eases his rifle over the lip of his cover and begins scanning the roof.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Command (Combat-leadership) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

Son of a piece of.... Ethan mentally curses the living ... well, living something or anything out of his tricorder. Looking at it again, he shakes his head and continues to scan the area, all the mean time keeping his rather amazing cover of debris and other boulders.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Personal Equipment (Tricorder) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Fails!

<CONTEST> Meran (claiming advantage) contests her Search skill vs Stewart's Planetside Survival (Urban) skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

Turtledove, apparently not too concerned by her lack of cover, crouches and scans the roof, her eyes alert, intense... her eyes come to a neat stop, sweeping back just a bit, her attention focused on the semi-concealed and decently fortified Stewart. She signals to Havaris, first to get his attention, then to convey information regarding Stewart's general position.

Meran tilts her head just outside of the piece of wall, black eyes scanning the roof for the other team's sniper. A few passes and she has him, a triumphant smile on her face. She holds her phaser against her chest, her finger near the trigger.

Stewart drops down to the ground, whipping out his tricorder, muttering to himself, "Where are they? They should have been here by now." He keys on the tricorder, rifle next to him, and then after a moment's thought taps on his combadge. Halfway shouting, he yells into the thing, "Stewart to Ensign Turtledove...", and listens for (hopefully) the echo.

Stewart taps his comm badge, "Ensign Stewart to Ensign Turtledove."

Turtledove's comm badge chirrups, and a voice says, "Ensign Stewart to Ensign Turtledove."

Summer keeps her cover, and tries to use the tricorder again to find live lifeforms in the area.

<CONTEST> Summer (claiming advantage) contests her Personal Equipment (Tricorder) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

Summer is about to throw the Tricorder out of the shuttlecraft, when she looks at it for one last moment, and blinks. She chirps the communicator "I've got three lifesigns, about 700 yards to my rear." She peeks out one of the ship's holes for a moment. "They've got excellent firing position, and some okay cover."

Havaris laughs softly as Turtledove's compin goes off. Loudly. "Clever boy." Despite that, he takes a moment to adjust his rifle into line, lifts a hand to motion down range in a command to open fire, returns his hand to his rifle to brace, takes in a breath and holds it -- and then gently eases down on the trigger...

<CONTEST> Havaris (claiming advantage) contests his Command (Combat Leadership) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

...the bolt of phaser fire strikes Stewart squarely in the shoulder. One shot down.

Remaining at his position, Ethan fiddles with his tricorder and then stops. Yes, just that abruptly. In fact, he even folds the damn thing up and simply slips it back into the pouch it was taken from once he hears Summer over the communications pin. That... and the fact phaser fire gives way - and not the far away stuff - quickly give away Team Alpha. Laying in the prone position which gives firing personnel an advantage in itself, Ethan readies his weapon.

Turtledove's mouth curves upward as her comm pin chirps, her eyes glinting with wry amusement, her hands, however, not straying from her rifle, not for a moment. Her grin widens as she takes aim on the decently-covered Stewart, her sparkling eyes focused intently on her prey as she pulls the trigger...

That... and the fact phaser fire gives way - and not the far away stuff - quickly give away Team Alpha. Laying in the prone position which gives firing personnel an advantage in itself, Ethan extends his right hand outwards, aiming along the path which leads to where the phaser fire is coming from. Spotting the one and only Turtledove, check that, the one and only exposed and without cover turtledove, Devereaux depresses the button on his phaser.

GAME: Devereaux spends a courage point.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser) skill vs Turtledove's Dodge skill and Fails!

Meran steps out just far enough to take a shot at Stewart up on the roof, her dark eyes fixing on him intently. She sees a beam of phaser light from Havaris' and Turtledove's positions and smiles, though these phaser beams will certainly give away their position. And that it does, as she sees Deveraux's beam go astray. She'll get him next. "That's two. Hopefully, here's three," she murmurs, pressing the trigger and hoping that the shot hits home.

Turtledove's mouth curves upward as her comm pin chirps, her eyes glinting with wry amusement, her hands, however, not straying from her rifle, not for a moment. Something does catch her eye, however, or perhaps her training kicks in. Whatever it is, she ducks just in time, Devereaux's shot going over her head. She quickly regains her composure, however, her grin widening as she re-takes aim on the decently-covered Stewart, her sparkling eyes focused intently on her prey as she pulls the trigger...

<repose>

<CONTEST> Summer (claiming advantage) contests her Planetside Survival (Urban) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

Summer runs out of the shuttlecraft, waving her arms at her side as she holds on rather tightly to the tricorder in one hand, the rifle in the other. "They aren't supposed to be shooting at me! What the hell! I'm a comm person dammit! Shoot them! Shoot them!" Running around nearly in a circle like a moron out in the open, she dives behind a large peice of rubble towards the front of the building, giving her some pretty good cover.

Stewart splays out his rope, not even bothering to tie a loop in it, merely doubling it over in his hand, and using that loop to snag around a protrusion in the rubble before he goes out the window, rapelling down the side. And in the process, putting an entire building between him and enemy fire.

"Stewart's disengaging! BRING DOWN ENSIGN DEVEREAUX!" Kusto, fully enraptured in the moment, roars this order as he shifts his fire to the well hidden Ensign. He spends a moment aiming before taking his shot with his rifle, keeping to his cover and attempting to drive Team Foxtrot back -- yea! -- to the very edges of the simulation!

<CONTEST> Havaris (claiming advantage) contests his Command (Combat Leadership) skill vs a difficulty of Moderate and Succeeds!

GAME: Havaris spends a courage point.

<CONTEST> Havaris contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser Rifle) skill vs Devereaux's Dodge skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

The blast from the rifle of Havaris scores a line across Devereaux's shoulder and down his back. That would hurt if this were live fire, yes indeed.

Shit - This is going downhill, and rather fast, but that's the fun of a situation like this. After all, when does a battle plan go the way it should? Well - it does for the winning team, but that's about it. Anyways, Ethan keeps his excellent cover and hopes it does him some good. With that in mine, he opens fire once more on the same target as before - Ensign Turtledove. Just as the beam leaves his own weapon, he gets nailed by Havaris and can't help but mutter under his breath.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser) skill vs Turtledove's Dodge skill and Succeeds!

Turtledove grins as her rifle fires true, hitting Stewart before he retreats down the side of the building. Her pleasure is soon cut short, however, as she shifts her attention to Devereaux and gets a chest-full of phaser fire. Her eyebrows ascend, and she gives Devereaux a nod of approval... even as she pulls the trigger on her own weapon, barrel aimed squarely at her team-mate...

<CONTEST> Turtledove contests her Energy Weapon (Phaser Rifle) skill vs Devereaux's Dodge skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

"With pleasure, sir!," Meran shouts back, momentarily forgetting her frustration with having missed Stewart. If she had only gotten him! Her dark eyes follow Havaris' phaser beam and she brings her phaser to bear on Ethan, a madly determined look in her eyes. Her finger presses down, the beam of energy streaming out of her phaser.

GAME: Meran spends a courage point.

Summer stands up suddenly. Looking left, then right..she screams out "Raaaammmbooooo!" and rushes foreward, towards the attacking group, taking an aimed shot at Turtledove, she fires, while humming loudly as she tries to quickly cover ground, getting ready to zig-zag if need be. "Hmmm...mmm-mmmmm-mmmmm-mmmmmm, mmmm-mmmmmm-mmm-mmmm.." essentially, humming the 'Rambo' theme, rather poorly.

Stewart gets to the ground, and calls out to Summer, "If you get close, blow the rifle." To Devereaux, he says, "Turtledove, then Havaris. If I don't take her down, I'm counting on you to. And hopefully she'll actually listen. Chances of that are nil." And with that, he moves over to the edge of the building, peeking around the corner, lining up... and firing.

GAME: Stewart spends a courage point.

<CONTEST> Stewart (claiming advantage) contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser Rifle) skill vs Turtledove's Dodge skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

This? Is not going as well as Havaris had hoped. Frowning, Havaris turns his rifle on the sniping fire from the roof. "MERAN! Nail Summer!" After all, Summer's out from cover and a sure thing. Meran's not been firing all that well on cover thusfar. He keeps behind his cover and returns the favor on Stewart, hopefully taking him out of the fight.

Turtledove steps out of the holodeck.

Turtledove has left.

The 'fatal shot' nails Stewart in the face, fittingly enough. One down on either side. Two to go.

Okay, so seeing Ethan's now in command... it really doesn't matter, mostly because Summer is out and about putting on a show and despite the fact he's near deep in combat, watching her brings a smile to his face, and a chuckle escapes his lips. None the less - It's back to business. Looking quickly about, Ethan takes aim on Meran - mostly for a person reason, and depresses the firing button and without carrying if it hits or not, he leaps to his feet - abandoning his cover, and moves behind the building, putting him out of harms way for the moment.

<CONTEST> Devereaux (claiming advantage) contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser) skill vs Meran's Dodge skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

Meran nods and turns her phaser on the perky comm officer. "Gods, don't let this miss," she says, still staying behind her cover as she takes a shot at the charging, green-haired woman, as she does so, being hit in the shoulder by Ethan's shot, a vindictive curse escaping her lips.

<CONTEST> Meran (claiming advantage) contests her Energy Weapon (Phaser) skill vs Summer's Dodge skill and Succeeds!

Summer sets her phaser-rifle to overload, effectively making it a large grenade. She continues running right towards the two, holding the gun tightly with both hands, letting go of the tri-corder. "Come here babies! Kissy kissy kissy!"

"Stay on Summer, Meran! I'll get Devereaux!" Havaris shifts his position a bit to get a better line on Devereaux, taking a moment to make certain of his aim. He releases a blast of phaser fire down-range, hoping to bring this battle to a certain conclusion.

<CONTEST> Havaris contests his Energy Weapon (Phaser Rifle) skill vs Devereaux's Dodge skill (given advantage) and Succeeds!

Before Devereaux can complete reach the safety of the building, the blast from Havaris' rifle clips his ankle. Not the most glorious third shot in the world, but it does the trick.

Well, that's game over boys and girls. And with that last hit, Ethan calls out, "Computer, End Program." and as everything vanishes, soon, everyone finds themselves in a rather large room complete with holo-emitters and the works. A grin plays his lips as the Ensign moves his way towards Meran, Turtledove and Havaris - extending his hand, "Nicely done, Team Alpha."

Summer has left.

Devereaux clears the current program.

"I daresay the teams were a touch stilted," Havaris says somewhat self-consciously, "what without a command-strong leader on Foxtrot's side. But you certainly turned the tide on us after you caught on to our position. Nicely done by you as well." Havaris shakes the offered hand and nods towards the exit. "Drinks, Gentlemen?"

The game of phaser tag ended on a humorous note. Nothing like Comm Officers making suicidal charges on superior firepower to make for a good drinking story. Once the simulation ends and the battlescape fades to the grid-lines of the holodeck, Teams Alpha and Foxtrot become once more the unified crew of s419. And the aforementioned drinking stories are heartily exchanged entertained over drinks. (Syntheholic ones for the RRT members, unfortunately.) Training with a laugh! Rare, but not unwelcome.
