Tyler steps through the hedge of the observation garden, hand in hand with
Park, and makes her way over toward the viewport. "I think this has to be
my favorite place on the station," she says.
Park follows behind Tyler with a big grin plastered on his face. "I
think it's starting to grow on me, too."
Tyler leans against the window and looks over at Park. "So what are your
thoughts on your predecessor? I know about what she did."
The station rotates into view of the anomaly.
Park leans back but maintains his hold on Tyler's hand. "There's not
much to say. I guess she screwed up one too many times." He looks out the
window at the Anomaly, "She was a really hard person to be around.",
he says.
Tyler nods. "I didn't know her very well," she says. "But if
her leaking information about my project endangers my project, she deserves what
she's got coming to her." Wendy's face is half-illuminated by the anomaly
light, now, and she looks very serious. It's not a question: She would protect
her secrets with her life.
Park nods grimly, "Unfortunately, I knew her TOO well." He shakes
his head, "I've just never in my LIFE met someone that was so NEGATIVE all
the time. And she was supposed to have had a minor in psychology, too."
Tyler nods several times and swallows. Undoubtedly she's got some black
thoughts regarding the whole mess. She turns her head to look out the window for
a moment, then looks back to Park. "The project has to stay safe. It cannot
be risked. Too many lives hang in the balance."
Park leans forward just far enough to kiss Tyler's hand. "Everything
will be fine, Wendy. Sector Command isn't going to let her go anywhere that she
can shoot off her mouth."
Tyler sighs softly and nods. "One can hope." She turns again to
look out at the anomaly. "Such an innocuous thing. And it leads to such
terror. I'm scared for us, Aaron. We may only have two years yet to be
together."
Park squeezes her hand. "Wendy, there is always hope. If we give that
up, then we've already lost." He turns from the Anomaly to look at her,
"I'm happy to be able to spend what time I can with you, be it a day or 50
years."
Aaron's words cause Wendy to smile despite those dark thoughts. She looks
back to him and says, "That is very sweet." She pauses for a beat,
then says, "I do have hope. And I have confidence. But I still worry. I
just don't want it to come to pass. I want those fifty years."
"I don't have a doubt in my mind that we'll get them.", Aaron says.
Tyler grins a little. "Why do you say that? As good as it sounds, I'm
just curious."
Park shrugs his shoulders, "I suppose that I'm just confident that it
will never start. You've got all kinds of people helping you now, with the DTI
and all." He shifts a bit on the bench, "Besides which, even if it
DOES happen, there's always our friend on the Aegis to help us."
Tyler's eyebrows pinch together. "What do you mean?"
The computer chirps and the mechanical computer voice states, "Alert.
Subject under observation has met your entered requirements for
notification."
Park sighs and shakes his head, "What is WRONG with people these
days?"
Park taps his comm badge, "Lieutenant Park to security, handle Ensign
Jackson and bar him from the Warp Core."
Park reaches up and taps his comm badge, ending transmission.
Tyler looks at Park. She doesn't drop her question. "What do you mean,
help us?"
Park shrugs his shoulders, "Well, I mean, it CAN go back and forth
through time.", he says weakly.
Tyler nods. "You're suggesting.. If my research doesn't work, that it be
used to try and.. fix things?" she asks. She bites her lower lip and shakes
her head. "That's against temporal ethics, Aaron."
Park shrugs a little bit, "Well, couldn't you maybe go forward and see
if there is something you can use? I mean, wouldn't the Wendy Tyler in the
future be trying to do the same thing as you're doing here?"
Tyler shakes her head and sighs softly. "I can't look into the future,
Aaron, it's against my orders."
Park nods slowly and then a smile blooms on his face. "Well, it's
against YOUR orders, but I don't recall seeing anything in mine that says I
can't do it."
Tyler wonders about the ethics of his suggestion and remains quiet for a long
moment. She finally says, "No."
Park nods slowly, "OK. Just thought I'd throw something out there."
He smiles, "You know that Temporal Mechanics isn't exactly my strong
suit."
Tyler says, "And being a doctor isn't mine. I'll make you a deal. I
won't tell you how to treat patients.."
Park chuckles, "And I won't tell you how to save the universe."
Tyler smiles and moves to slip an arm around him. "It's a deal."
