  Like all other cultural forms, religion is a diverse point of pride in the
  UFP. While many Starfleet officers, especially those from 'core worlds' like
  Terra/Earth or Mars, are areligious, as examples of the UFP's best and
  brightest, they are expected to exemplify the UFP ideals of tolerance and
  respect toward all cultures and life forms. A Starfleet officer who mocks,
  derides, or otherwise degrades another's spiritual beliefs -- especially
  publicly -- might very likely find him or herself receiving career
  counseling or disciplinary measures from his or her superior officers.

  While the UFP's general citizenry are not held to the same rigorous standards
  as Starfleet officers, intolerance of specific cultures is rare and frowned
  upon as a general rule, especially among humans as a race and persons of any
  sort of note such as government officials and diplomats; these individuals
  are expected to maintain the same sort of respect for other cultures and
  preservation of dignity for all life forms to which Starfleet officers
  aspire. At the very least, someone openly mocking or degrading another's
  religion in public would be viewed with mild horror, much as if they belched
  loudly or picked their nose in the middle of a funeral.

  Religion on the core human worlds of Earth and Mars is an antiquated relic;
  it is simply not practiced by the vast, vast majority of humans, and is often
  viewed as a curiosity at best and a harmful impediment to social growth at
  worst. It is extremely unlikely that any human raised outside of an official
  Cultural Preserve on Terra proper would have had a religious upbringing;
  humanistic atheism is the prevailing philosophy on Terra proper, and has been
  for at least a hundred years.
