  Starfleet Protocol
  
  Protocol is the acceptable response to a given situation based on precedence.
  While Regulation 4B states that the "orders of a superior officer are to be 
  followed at all times," protocol demands that superior officers be treated 
  with respect. The series of operations routinely performed when a starship 
  goes to yellow alert - bringing all active bridge stations to Full Enable 
  Mode, raising deflector shields, etc. - represents another example of 
  Starfleet protocol in action. Many of Starfleet's traditions and sources of
  protocol can be traced back to Earth, one of the founding member worlds of 
  the Federation. Many centuries ago Earth's inhabitants sailed the seas in 
  ships, and developed vernacular that over the years became more commonly 
  known as "naval tradition." Starfleet follows this tradition today in many 
  ways, such as the current Starfleet rank structure.
