promotion 04Jun15
Players who have been around for a while could potentially be promoted to a
higher rank. Note that this must happen through roleplay, and is not 'bought'
with XP. There are limitations, however. If you are not a command officer
(not one of the department heads), your maximum rank you can achieve will be
Lt. If you are a department head, your maximum rank will be Lt Cmdr. First
Officer can reach a rank of Commander, and the CO is Captain.
Do not ask for a promotion. If it is recognized that you are doing a job well
done, you will be approached IC to be promoted if you have not already
achieved your maximum rank possible.

Examples of roleplay means of acquiring a promotion are based upon the
following. Bi-Annual Officer Examination Reviews (OERs), Time-In-Grade, Field
Achievements, and Commendations/Reprimands. Each is reviewed in order to
determine if the officer is capable and ready for the promotion.
A player and/or an officer should not expect to be automatically promoted
upon reaching the minimum requirement for Time-In Grade. For example, a 24
month Engineering Ensign has followed every order but has shown no leadership
skills could possibly not be promoted to Lieutenant JG despite perfect marks
on the OERs. Likewise could occur for a player and/or an officer who achieves
perfect scores on the OERs. An officer could show promise intellectually
speaking but could fail in the field as a leader.
It is not unordinary for an Ensign to wait more than 18-24 months for a
promotion to Lieutenant JG. And the higher the rank, Starfleet expects more
responsibility, leadership, and innovative thinking out of an officer rather
than a perfect record.
