The economic system of the Federation is much different that that of Earth
during the 21st century. Microeconomics for all intents and purposes is non-
existent. Energy sources are nearly limitless and replicator technology is
widespread. Because of this, there is no such thing as poverty. Earth is a
veritable paradise in which a citizen's objective is to become the best person
they can. Occasionally someone might run a business of sorts, but this is
usually for personal satisfaction rather than profit, hence the reason that
there are Federation credits. Frontier worlds may have things a little
rougher, but still life is good. All the basic essentials are covered and
nobody should ever go hungry or live without.

This is not to say that the Federation is completely without finances.
When dealing with other empires such as the Klingons, Romulans, and
especially the Ferengi it is important to have a means for trade. Latinum is
often times the favored device, though each empire has it's own currency and
sometimes valuable elements are used instead of currency, such as dilithium.

What does all this mean to you as a player? It plays a major role in to your
background. You won't be able to create a character from Earth who came from
the "bad side of town" because there /is/ no bad side of town. Nor could your
family have been struggling financially. The Federation would provide for all
their needs. It also means that if you plan on being driven by profit, your
trader character is going to want to have some experience in dealing with
outside cultures as trading in the Federation alone won't usually yield much
  in terms of profit.

If you want to play a character who is from the 'bad side of the tracks',
then you should play a Colonist or someone who was raised in a tough-and-
tumble Frontier colony. More often than not, these planets are not the utopia
  that Earth is.
