imzadi

imzadi 02Nov15

Imzadi is a concept that is unique to the Betazoid race, though there are
other races that do have somewhat similar parallels. The literal translation
of the word is roughly equivalent to 'beloved', though in actuality, it goes
far, far deeper than that. A person may love more than one person... but he
or she will only have one imzadi, one person who is their true love, their
  soulmate.

The concept of imzadi goes beyond the basic concept of love. A telepathic
bond connects a Betazoid to his or her imzadi, giving them a sense of
connectedness, and neither time nor distance can sever that link. Only death
can accomplish that, and after that link is severed, it is possible, though
rare, for that person to ever find another with whom they feel that same
sense of connectedness. In this way, the imzadi bond could be likened to the
bond between two mated Vulcans... though less logical and much, much more
passionate and emotional. A Betazoid's imzadi is, generally, another
Betazoid, but there are exceptions to that rule. There are precedents, such
as the relationship between Deanna Troi and William T. Riker of the Starship
Enterprise, which indicate that the bond of imzadi may even be shared between
a half-Betazoid and a human. Telepathic communication via this bond may take
a good deal more effort and concentration on the part of the normally
non-telepathic party, but it is possible.
