We use a contest system here at Anomaly TrekMUX. This contest system differs
from the Last Unicorn Games' Trek rules, and is designed to allow players to
resolve their own conflicts without the intervention of staff. The rules for
the contest system are fairly simple.
The challenger (the instigator of the action) poses his attempt. The defender
poses her attempt. The two opponents quickly discuss advantage or
disadvantage (preferably in pages) for the contest. The challenger then uses
+contest and the results are displayed. The code calculates the odds for
success or failure by comparing the stats between the two opponents.

Note that there is always a chance of success, and always a chance for
failure. Dramatic success and Dramatic failures are also supported. A
dramatic success is a success that gives unexpected bonuses (such as a
character not only manages to disarm the Jem'Hadar, but knock him out too).
A dramatic failure means that the character fails in a spectacular way (the
character not only gets shot with a phaser, but her stunned body also rolls
into the path of the security team trying to save her, distracting them
enough so that the bad guys get away).

The claiming of 'Advantage' or 'Disadvantage' can affect the odds and the
thus the outcome. Advantage can be claimed if your character has a character
advantage on your +stats, or other circumstances warrant. Players must work
out amongst themselves who gets advantage or disadvantage.
