There is a fine art to writing the character background. How big should it
be? How much information should it divulge? How much room should be left for
future development? These are all questions which haunt the MUSHer - that and
the actual writing of the background.
There are some guidelines which the production team wants you to follow in
writing up your background. Your character has had a full life before now,
and the background should be detailed enough to reflect it. The background
is what takes the two-dimensional statistics from the +stats and turns it
into a living, breathing character. While the production team does not want
to read the War and Peace version of your character's history, they also
don't want to read a three-sentence paragraph that says 'I was born, now
I'm here'. How boring the universe would be if everyone had details like
this!

There are several stages you should discuss in your background. Note that
these questions are for nudging ideas, and are not all inclusive.
I. Childhood
a) Who were her parents?
b) Where was she born?
c) Anything really interesting happen to her in this time?
d) Any other family members? Siblings? A strange old Aunt?
II. Teenage Years
a) What were the teenage years like for this character?
b) If in Starfleet - this is where to describe your Academy years.
NOTE: See 'news academy'.
1) Any special honors or awards, or teachers that made an impression?
2) What did they specialize in while in the Academy?
3) Any 'special' duties?

III. Adult
a) If the character is in Starfleet, where was the first tour of
duty spent?
b) Anything special happen during this time?
c) Any relationships the character struck up that have since soured?
d) Anything else you can think of to add depth.
You should think up a few quirks for the character. Quirks are what make the
character unique among other characters. Some examples of quirks are: Never
goes on an away mission without his lucky rabbits foot. Plays 2D chess
instead of 3D chess. Talks with her mouth full.
We hope these guidelines are of some assistance to you!
