Alethea "Thea" Ruth Medes

Rank: Lt. JG

Species: Human (Earth, San Francisco)

Position: Vehicle Maintenance, Station 419

Summary:

2348: Born in San Francisco to Jacob and Leah Medes. When Leah and Jacob return to active duty (as a Biosciences Officer and Core Systems Engineer, respectively) on the USS Yamaguchi, Thea remains behind in the care of Katherine Stewart, her maternal aunt.

2351: Thea’s hearing defect is discovered at her third birthday physical, upon concerns from her aunt that her speech development was lagging severely. While waiting on authorization from Jacob and Leah to attempt to correct this birth defect, cochlear implants are suggested and eventually installed. Rather than put her back under the knife, it is decided to allow her to keep the implants until she is older and can decide whether or not to try to have the defect repaired. More than a month after her surgery, she speaks her first word. Several years of therapy follow to assist her in speaking normally, and as an result, she suffers very little consequence in her adult life from her late start into the world of the hearing.

2364: Accepted at regional civilian university, Medes maintains a GPA of 2.6. Her professors and personal advisor comment on her ability to excel, should she care to do so, and a deep-running resentment toward Starfleet which seems to surface whenever possible in papers and essays. Her parents, concerned by this, communicate with her extensively while still posted to the USS Yamaguchi.

2367: While on leave visiting her sister, Leah Medes misses the USS Yamaguchi’s departure to Wolf 359. Jacob Medes is one of the 11,000 casualties. Leah is removed almost immediately from active duty and does not return for several years. Shortly thereafter, Alethea begins the application process and testing for Starfleet Academy.

2367: After eight attempts, Thea is accepted to Starfleet Academy. At the Academy, the academic turnaround she had to demonstrate before being admitted expanded itself into the social and emotional frontiers, and she gained a reputation for almost painful honesty. Shortly, she finds her niche in Vehicle Maintenance and Material Engineering.

2371:  Cadet Cruise on the USS Habronnatus. During this time, Kate Stewart dies of a stroke. Immediately after her return and graduation, Medes is assigned to the Earth Defense Force Attack Wing and serves on a repair crew.

2372:  With the retirement of her crew’s leader, Thea assumes the post of Vehicle Maintenance Officer and takes charge of her first work crew. She remains with this particular crew for the next three years.

2375:  Requesting a transfer to s419 for personal reasons, Medes gains somewhat of a promotion, in that at s419, she directs all of the shuttle bay’s work crews. She takes to this like a fish to water, and settles into her new home.

2375: Stranded on Fimdari after a failed joint mission with the ADF, Medes, as part of Lt. JG Poole's away team, is rescued by the liberators of Fimdari.

2375: Passes her Line Officer Evaluation as administered by Lt. JG Poole.

2375: Engineering Officer on the away team headed by Lt. JG Gwendolyn Poole during the Liberation of Occa. This away team was responsible for terminating the power supply to the planet's shield grid without destroying the facility in question. The mission is a success. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Star and the Starfleet Combat Medal for her conduct during this action.

2375: Ensign Medes' mother, a Science instructor at Starfleet Academy, is killed in the Breen attacks on Earth.

2375: Converts to Prophet Worship. Gifted with a unique earpiece thereafter by Lt. JG Havaris Kusto.

2375: Presents Havaris Kusto with a Bajoran pledge bracelet while on shore leave for her birthday.

2375: Engineering Officer on duty in Operations during the shift wherein the Fallen Star was pursued into station space by heretofore unknown models of combat shuttlecraft. Part of the away team under the command of Lt. JG Poole which subdued a hostile boarder, prevented a warp core breach of the damaged ship, and brought her to dock with s419-u. The mission is a success.

2375: Engineering Officer on duty on the Thomas Paine during the routine patrolling shift wherein the CTC Hernes, heavily damaged, came out of warp on a collision course with the Anomaly. Lead the away team which brought the damaged craft back under control and prevented the loss of the ship and and its crew. The mission is a success. Recommended for promotion by Lt. JG Poole, the commanding officer of that mission, as a result of her conduct during this action.

2375: Dies on the table in the Infirmary due to injuries sustained in the course of a classified mission. Revived by Lt. Park and Ensign Malloy.

2376: Lead the shuttle flight during a near-miss incident with an asteroid. The mission is a success.

2376: Commanding Officer and co-pilot of the CS-P2 Levy during the test flight of the shuttle prototypes. Their test flight is interrupted by a Nausicaan boarding party on the CS-P1 Shoemaker. Both shuttles escape from the confrontation completely unscathed. Thus, the mission is a success.

2376: Promoted to Lt. JG.

2376: Marries Lt. JG Havaris Kusto.

2376: Reprimanded for her role as commanding officer of the shuttle test flight, during which three Nausicaans were transported into space as a defensive maneuver. Ordered to review the regulations regarding the Use of Force with the station's training officer, and suspended from leading away teams for a period of three months.

2376: During s419's OERs, scored 10/10 on her SQT, 10/10 on her BPM, and 4/5 on the PRT, giving her an overall score of 2.66 in the first tier OERs. She is not promoted due to time-in-grade requirements, but given a formal commendation by Commander Balin for her performance.

2376: Lead  the engineering team which assists s419's security in breaking open a child-smuggling ring run by the Syndicate. After spending several days breaking open databases, to the point of being ejected forcibly from Engineering by Lt. JG Nevaren and ordered not to return until she had gotten eight consecutive hours of sleep, she recovered the information necessary to arrange a raid in which over three hundred children were rescued from imminent sale, including her niece, Havaris Nua. For her efforts in procuring the information, she is formally commended by Commander Balin. For her participation in the raid itself, she is awarded the Hand of Mercy.

2376: Received the right to wear the Presidential Unit Citation awarded by President Rosarev Kor, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet, to all officers serving aboard Station 419-Upsilon between 1 January 2373 and 1 January 2376, for general excellence in the service of strategic and diplomatic matters during the Dominion War.

2376: Part of the Away Team lead by Lt. Cmdr. Ghorev which rescues the Orb of Destiny, a Bajoran religious artifact, from a splinter group of Romulans attempting to steal the object for reasons unknown. She is granted an Orb experience shortly thereafter.

2376: As part of a delegation sent to Occa under the command of Lt. Dakin, she is provided with the opportunity to drive an old-fashioned Terran vehicle -- specifically a limosine -- for the first time outside of a holodeck.

Proficiencies: Vehicle Operations (Shuttlecraft & Ground Vehicles), Systems Engineering (Engineering & Weapons Systems), Shipboard Systems (Flight Control, Engineering, Transporters & Weapons Systems). She has a reputation for extreme honesty and dedication to her work; her loyalty to her friends and fellow officers is, as was put in one of her performance reviews, "developed to the point of hypertrophy."

Hobbies:  Rock climbing, surfing, ancient photographic processes, antique chronometer manufacture and repair. If it's old and technologically-inclined, Thea's interested.

Additional Notes:  Thea is nicknamed 'The Wolf,' an appellation used largely by her closest friends and family, and refers to her closest friends as "packmates."
