2373: Graduates from Starfleet Academy 34th in his class. His cadet cruise is spent on the USS Ning, a science vessel, maintaining the sciences database. After graduation, he is posted on starbase 298, and assigned to a group of researchers tasked with analyzing the capabilities of Dominion vessels from early sensor logs.

2375: As the project makes its findings, and actual Dominion ship wreckage is able to be analyzed, the research group members are transferred to replace war losses. After an unusual transfer to the quartermaster's office of starbase 298 for a short time, Laco is sent to Station 419.

2375: Laco is promoted to Lt. JG.

2375: During a research project, Lt. Laco is injured. As a result, a piece of crystal is embedded into his face.
