2351: Earned scholarship to the Daystrom Institute based on published paper on Neutral Zone tactics.

2352: Accepted into Starfleet Academy

2353: Wins a two-dimensional chess tournament against other cadets, publishes paper on two-dimensional chess and strategies shortly thereafter.

2354: Invited into Red Squad.

2355: Dismissed from Red Squad with a reprimand while on cadet cruise aboard the USS Washington on patrol of the Neutral Zone.

2356: Graduates from Starfleet Academy with academic honors.

2357: Assigned to Transmission Relay J5.

2359: Transferred to Starfleet Command, Earth, teaching a specialized class on Romulan Tactics at the Academy.

2366: Transferred to USS Hawking, tactical officer.

2369: Promoted to first officer of USS Hawking.

2370: Balin is field-promoted to acting captain of the USS Hawking as Captain Alexandrovich is injured. Destroys the V'Tarus, a Romulan warbird that has crossed into the Neutral Zone. Balin does not know it at the time, but the V'Tarus is a training ship carrying thousands of Romulan cadets on their Serona.

2373: Offered command of new station along Neutral Zone, Station 419.

2374: Balin is infected with a virus targeting his DNA, initially thought to be Romulan in origin. The disease destroys part of his brain, and his psionic abilities with it. Through intensive rehabilitation under the care of Doctor Holliday, he recovers - but the psionic gifts of the Betazoid are lost to him.

2374: Instrumental in uncovering the actions of Sinclaire, the rogue Admiral.

2374: Balin returns to Betazed to tend to his dying mother. During his visit, he undergoes intensive psionic treatments from Betazoid physicians. He is able to gain back part of his psionic abilities. The Dominion invades shortly after, and he is trapped on Betazed. Starfleet officially lists him as missing in action.

2375: Balin manages to get one signal out of occupied space - an SOS distress call. Starfleet Command decides rescue/assistance to Betazed is too risky at this time, and orders his former crew to sit on their hands.

2375: Balin is rescued against orders by his former second officer, Lt. Poole and her rag-tag unit of commandos. He returns to the station with a large group of Betazoid refugees.  Starfleet Command places him in charge of his station once more.
